Bengkung belly binding $100+

Picture
Bengkung Belly Binding originated in Malaysia anciently. During their confinement period, women were wrapped from pubic bone to sternum to help the bones, muscles, and organs return to their pre-pregnancy position. Traditionally, this was 30-40 days. Our culture does not support the idea of a new mother being entirely out of commission for a month or more, but we can still reap some of the benefits with bengkung belly binding. I suggest binding at night, just before bed, and removing when it becomes uncomfortable.

Included in my belly binding package is
  • Free consultation
  • 14 yard muslin binding, hand dyed or unbleached, your choice, approximately 10" wide. Additional if necessary for plus sized women.
  • Belly Panel for underneath the bind
  • Warming paste or essential oils applied to belly before binding, for enhanced healing

I offer 3 packages,
  • 1 day single bind, with instruction of self binding, or to your spouse so they can continue binding $100
  • 3 day bind, $175
  • 5 day bind, $275
  • I will bind for longer, if you desire, $50 each additional day.

I offer discounts for if you purchase belly binding in addition to a birth or postpartum doula package.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I wear the bind?

Traditionally women wore this for the entirety of their confinement period, up to forty days. This is less than doable in our society, and  benefits diminish after about two weeks. I suggest binding for 5-10 days and leaving it on for 12-24 hours a day.

Why should I do this as opposed to a girdle or Belly Bandit?

There are several reasons this is better, the first is comfort. Because it is custom fit to you, it hugs your body, your proportions and brings it together. Second, because it is wrapped in an upward manner, it carries you upwards, while many girdles push everything down, causing pressure on your organs and possible uterine prolapse. Next is coverage. Most girdles only cover the waistline, but this type of belly bind goes from your pubic bone to your sternum. This offers more support. Even the material is more comfortable. I bind with muslin cotton, most girdles are spandex, Velcro, and perhaps boning. That doesn't even sound comfortable.

My belly bind bunches, rolls, or moves during the day. How can I keep it from doing that?

This bind was originally used during confinement. Women mostly stayed  in bed for the time wearing it. As you move, it moves, which is why it is bunching and twisting. Resting as much as possible while wearing your belly bind will minimize shifting. When  it gets uncomfortable you can take it off or rebind, but I encourage you to be sleeping and reclining as much as possible during the days you are bound.

I have heard you can bind during pregnancy. Why and how would you do that?

Relaxin works in your body loosening joints throughout pregnancy. This can cause discomfort, as the joints are less supported. I can come and wrap you short, so it just covers your hips and supports under your belly, or you can tie a wrap around your hips with a rebozo or long scarf to support your hips and growing belly. Please be careful as improper  continuous binding can restrict fetal growth and cause more pain.

I had a c-section. Can I still wear a belly bind?

Yes, you can, but we have to wait until the incision is healed. Your body should be healed by 4-6 weeks postpartum, and we can wrap then.

I had a still birth or miscarriage, would binding be beneficial?

Yes. Binding gives a sense of support, and helps with your healing. It feels like a hug, that can be very welcome through this time of struggle. Contact me for special bereavement pricing.

I want to learn to bind myself. Will you teach me?

Yes! Very often women who want to bind for longer than 5-10 days will want to learn to self bind. You can purchase days you want me to bind you, and add on training to bind yourself later if you want.
